Google’s New Quantum Computing Chip Wowed Elon Musk, Hints the Wider Vision

Google CEO, Sunder Pichai, posted on X about the “new state-of-the-art quantum computing” chip called “Willow”. The post grabbed the attention of the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, who responded with “Wow”.

The conversation got underway in a back-and-forth with Pichai, who said, “We should do a quantum cluster in space with Starship one day:).” After that, Musk replied, “That will probably happen.”

Although, Hartmut Neven, Founder and Lead of Google Quantum AI wrote in a Monday blog post, “Willow’s performance on this benchmark is astonishing: It performed a computation in under five minutes that would take one of today’s fastest supercomputers 1025 or 10 septillion years.”

 He added, “The more qubits we use in Willow, the more we reduce errors, and the more quantum the system becomes.”

Unlike other computers, quantum computing chips developed by Google can perform computations faster and leverage the principles of quantum mechanics. It implements quantum bits or qubits rather than binary bits (0 and 1) as the smallest data units. Quantum chips integrate with 105 qubits overcoming the usual issue of error correction.

Additionally, Google claims Willow can fix real-time problems. It would make quantum computing chips to deal with practical concerns in medicine, artificial intelligence, and energy utilization. Neven stated Willow as one of the biggest achievements of Google.

Pichai and Musk’s conversation indicates the wider vision of Google for quantum computing chips. It hints beyond Earth, where quantum clusters in the space for optimizing energy. 

Alongside Musk, the computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman also posted on X, “Amazing 🤯 Congrats!”

It is readily apparent that quantum computing chips will transform the computation methods.
